Review – Resident Evil 4 Remake

Ada Wong holding the key to my heart ❤️

I’ve had a cursory interest in the Resident Evil franchise ever since Resident Evil 7. I’ve watched people play that game along with the Resident Evil 2 remake. But until this particular remake, I never played a RE game myself mostly because I have never been one for horror games. The remake for Resident Evil 4 however piqued my interest. Through various channels I had heard that RE4 definitely leans more into its action rather than its horror.

Media Diet – March 2023

The month of March was a good one as far as media goes.

I watched the third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks which continues to be just a good and fun time. The best Star Trek out right now and its not even a debate for me.

I played all the way through Elden Ring. I used a mod to make the game much easier for me which allowed me to experience all the cool shit the game has to offer. At some point I want to write a review of the game but I am still processing the game in my head. There is just…a lot there.

I also got into Fortnite after watching Holiwhirl‘s sponsored streams of the game. No build mode makes the game a lot more enjoyable for me and I am enjoying the very silly nature of everything in the game. It’s a nice change of pace from the more “serious” shooters.

I finally got around to reading Aubrey Gordon’s latest book “You Just Need to Lose Weight” And 19 Other Myths About Fat People. I picked this up back in January but only started reading it this month. An important read that gave me much to reflect on.

I watched a movie in an actual movie theatre! It has been years and years since I’ve done that. I am a big fan of the John Wick movies so John Wick: Chapter 4 coming out this month meant I went to an actual movie theatre, bought some popcorn and watched a movie with a bunch of other people. It was a good movie, I really enjoyed it!

Lastly, I started playing the remake of Resident Evil 4. I am still making my way through it and I am happy to say I am enjoying it. It is my first Resident Evil game! Looking forward to finishing it!

That’s all from me this month, see y’all next month!

DNS TTL Limits at Public DNS Resolvers

In my post about the basics of DNS TTLs and caching I mentioned that DNS resolvers use the TTL of the record to determine how long to cache any particular record for. While this is /normally/ true, there are exceptions. Namely, certain public DNS resolvers have a upper limit of the TTL that they will cache. That is, if you set a TTL longer than their limit, the resolver will bring the TTL down to their limit and cache it using their TTL.

A Hug From A Computer

This is a republishing of a post I wrote for my now defunct music newsletter. Substack sucks so the post is here now.

Yesterday, someone mentioned that some types of electronic music feel like getting a hug from a computer. That got me thinking. What kind of music engenders that kind of emotion from me? The first thing that comes to mind are warm synths.

My most favourite example in this category is Daft Punk’s last album Random Access Memories. The synths on this? It is like getting a hug from a friend.

Another example of a slightly different kind of hug would be Boards of Canada’s EP In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country. It is extremely calming. Like the computer going, “hey, its gonna be alright”.

For a more party computer hug kinda vibe the album is Fred again…’s album Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9 2022). All of Fred’s music feels like getting a hug from a computer. It is really quite something.

I also highly recommend his Boiler Room set which is still something I listen to whenever I need some good vibes.

Last but definitely not least. Utada Hikaru’s track Find Love is another favourite in this genre. The beep boops in this one…ahhhhhh

That’s all from me today. What music makes you feel like a hug from a computer?
