Review: When Among Crows by Veronica Roth

A square crop of the cover of When Among Crows by Veronica Roth.

This book was another one that was recommended/mentioned by cari of the cari can read YouTube channel. It immediately caught my attention as cari mentioned it was a urban fantasy set in Chicago. As a long time fan of the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher I knew I had to give this one a read.

The first thing that stands out about this book is the cover. It is a gorgeous cover, I have seen the cover on a physical copy and it looks even better than in screenshots/images. The other thing that it is a short novel at 176 pages. I don’t know what the exact distinction between a novella and novel are but this definitely feels like a novella. Not short enough to be a short story but not long enough to be a novel.

I enjoyed this book! It had interesting characters and a fantasy world built on Polish mythology with creatures that I am not entirely familiar with so all of it felt fairly fresh and unique. The main plot is fast paced and doesn’t waste time. My only criticism about this book is that it is one of those rare cases where a novella/novel is too short. I wanted more of this world and its characters.

I really hope the author makes this a series and it doesn’t stay a stand alone book. There is a lot of potential in these characters, the world, and the mythology. In any case, this book reaffirmed the fact that urban fantasy remains my most favourite fantasy sub-genre. More like this please!
