Review: Porco Rosso (1992)

Shot from Porco Rosso with the pig character saying "Better a pig than a Fascist"

This was…fine. It was an entertaining watch. Gorgeous in the way all Studio Ghibli movies are. The plot has faint threads of magical realism running through it, however the movie only explores those in a superficial manner. There are also themes of war and trauma throughout but again the movie only dabbles in these as set dressing.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988), also from Studio Ghibli is a much better exploration of those themes, if you are looking for something that explores those themes using Ghibli’s house style.

I almost didn’t write this review because I don’t have much to say about this movie. However, a Ghibli movie that is unremarkable is in itself a remarkable enough occurrence for me to make a note of it here. Not the worst way to spend 90 minutes of your time but the Ghibli catalogue has much better in it.
