Review: The Shades of Magic Trilogy by V. E. Schwab

This is the first time I’ve reviewed an entire trilogy of books but since I read all three of these in the same month one after the other I think it makes sense. I’ve read V. E. Schwab’s work before, namely I read her book Vicious as the first book of my 2022 reading challenge.

I enjoyed Vicious well enough back then to have put the first book in the Shades of Magic trilogy, A Darker Shade of Magic in my Kobo wishlist. However, I didn’t get around to reading it until I saw Cari of the cari can read YouTube channel mention the series in a video recently.

Combined with cari mentioning it plus a desire to get out of the reading slump I was in, I started reading the first book and then just continued. Schwab’s writing style just works really well for my brain. I found the books a breeze to get through.

Schwab doesn’t linger too much on overlong descriptions of scenes or people which is one of my pet peeves. The plots are well paced and the characters are interesting and have enough intrigue going on to keep you hooked. The romance sub-plots are well developed and don’t feel out of place in the wider narrative (another pet peeve when it comes to fantasy).

For a trilogy, I’d say all three books maintain the same level of quality throughout. Oftentimes the second book in the trilogy can feel a bit meh but not in this case. Its been a long time since I’ve really sunk my teeth into a book series and its good to be back in the groove with such a banger of a series.

I don’t know if I’ll read Schwab’s other series but in any case I’d like to thank her for getting me out of this particular reading slump. Also thank you to cari yet again for recommending a series that I enjoyed. I’m more excited about reading than I’ve been since 2022.
